Metric Prefixes Metric prefixes are symbols that represent the most commonly used powers of ten in engineering notation. A metric prefix can replace the powers of ten that is expressed in engineering notations. For example, 0.075 amperes can be expressed as 75 mA. Or 100,000,000 ohms can be expressed as 100MΩ, the prefix mega has replaced the powers of ten value. See the chart below for commonly metric prefixes with their symbols and corresponding powers of ten values.

Metric Unit Conversions It is often necessary to convert a quantity from one metric prefix unit to another. An example of such an instance would be milliamperes (mA) to microamperes(µA). When converting from a larger unit move the decimal point to the right. When converting from a smaller unit move the decimal point to the right. Determine the number of places the decimal point is moved by finding the difference in the powers of ten.
